The Oxford Neurodevelopmental Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Centre is featuring Elekta’s advanced new Neuromag® technology for the investigation of autism. The new centre is the world’s first purpose-built facility specialising in the study and research of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
Stockholm Tools of Science is a joint research information system run by Stockholm Science City (SSCi), an organisation commissioned by the three leading universities Karolinska Institutet, The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Stockholm University as well as the city and county. The purpose of the Tools of Science platform is to make research competences and core facilities at these universities more visible and accessible to stimulate research collaboration in Stockholm. This includes access to facilities and competences for researchers from both academia and industry.
Stockholm and Uppsala has been a leading European life science region for long and in May, 2007 the organization Stockholm-Uppsala Bioregion was formed. The aim of the non-profit organization is to promote the long-term prosperity of the life science sector in the region by promoting the region in the international arena. The founders of Stockholm-Uppsala Bioregion with it’s headquarters in Uppsala are Biotechvalley.nu Foundation, Stockholm Business Region and Uppsala BIO.
Stockholm County Council has decided to add another 6,5 million € to bring forward the development of the New Karolinska Hospital, in order to speed up the development of the new hospital. The New Karolinska Hospital with approximately 600 beds will replace the current Karolinska University Hospital.
In a national competition The Swedish Research Council has chosen four research centres as national Berzelii centres. Three of these centres are located in the Stockholm-Uppsala region. The Berzelii centre programme is a collaboration between VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems) and the Swedish Research Council. The Berzelii centres will focus on excellent research and in the long run commercialisation. The four chosen centres were considered to have the strongest research within their areas and the best potential for collaboration with the private industry.
In a package deal, the Swedish government invests more than 16 million € in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medtech sectors, with the expectation that the private sector businesses in the industry will invest similar amounts. As a result, one of Europe’s leading life science clusters (biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology) are now growing in the Stockholm region.
Karolinska Instututet has accumulated € 80 million for the development of biotech firms. The institute has a long track record of commercialisation of medical discoveries and its innovation system is unique in the world.
The Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship “Stockholm/Uppsala - Strengthening and enhancing its position as an emerging neuro-technology cluster” ranks Stockholm/Uppsala as the 10th leading neuro-technology cluster in the world.
Stockholm/Uppsala Life Science Cluster is creating an “Atlas of Human Proteins” to enable early diagnoses of cancer and other diseases.
Stockholm City North is to become ‘The Science City’ in 2020. The northern part of Stockholm will host ‘The Science City’ of tomorrow.
