David Svensson, an innovative young Ericsson phone engineer, got a world patent.
Wayfinder Systems in Stockholm offers maps, direction and GPS navigation services accessible by mobile phones. They also provide mobile services, including digital city guidebooks, traffic information, currency conversion and weather reports.
In 1989, David Svensson, an innovative engineer at Sony Ericsson, thought that what if, one day, we had the hardware to integrate GPS receivers into mobile phones? He was inspired by the US space satellite projects and the images of the former American military navigation systems now turned into civilian use. A few years later, he bought the project from Sony Ericsson, took it further, applied for a world patent and started his own company - Wayfinder.
Today, Wayfinder offers worldwide navigation maps of cities with detailed restaurant, shop, hotel and tourist info references plus traffic information, speed camera warnings and weather forecasts. Several more services are in the pipeline.
Wayfinder Navigator North America is also nominated for the prestigious mobile application award in the category "Best New Application, Symbian UIQ". Last year Wayfinder won a Handandgo Award in the category "Best New Application Europe".
