Stockholm is Europe’s leading region in developing extremely fast-growing and successful technology companies. Of the 20 top companies on this year’s Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list four companies are from Stockholm. No other European region has so many companies that are ranked among the top 20 on the list.
The accounting and consulting company, Deloitte’s list of the fastest growing technology companies in Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA) is based on the companies’ percentage growth rate over the last five years. Three companies from Israel top the list. Overall, Sweden has a very strong position with 50 companies on the list. Only Great Britain, France and the Netherlands have more fast-growing companies. From a population perspective, this means that Sweden, and in particular, Stockholm, holds a very unique position.
The Stockholm company, Tobii Technology, which is number eight on the list, is a world-leader in hardware and software solutions for eye tracking. Eye tracking enables a computer to tell exactly where a person is looking. Other companies from Stockholm that are among the top 20 are the software company, Global IP Solutions, which develops solutions for real-time communications over IP networks, Sky Communication in Sweden, which constructs and operates networks for computer and telecommunications, and PacketFront Sweden, which is a leader within advanced broadband solutions for fiber to homes.
”We are extremely happy that so many companies from Stockholm are among the fastest-growing in Europe. I see this as proof that the region’s world-leading cluster within ICT and Life Science is creating a strong research and growth-driven environment where many small, high technology companies can grow rapidly. This also confirms that Stockholm is the natural capital of Scandinavia,” says Olle Zetterberg, CEO of Stockholm Business Region.
Sweden’s position as an important growth nation can be confirmed by several other leading comparisons. The Global Competitiveness Report 2007-08, from the World Economic Forum, ranks Sweden number four in the world in accordance with the organisation’s Global Competitiveness Index, which is calculated based on a large number of indicators. Professor Michael E. Porter, Harvard University, writes in the report that: ”Sweden draws its strength from modern management structures, a focus of businesses toward innovation, and a regulatory and policy environment oriented toward open and innovation-based competition”.
At the same time, the German research institute, DIW, lists Sweden as the world’s most innovative industrial nation in its annual report. The report focuses on Sweden’s governmental efforts in research and development and access to venture capital.
